About the Artist

Robert Birch has been sketching, drawing and painting for a lifetime. A quick look through some of his sketchbooks will reveal luminous, airy water colours and delicate ink drawings, the hallmarks of an artist who is endlessly fascinated by the world around him.

After growing up in Western Australia and a brief sojourn as a teacher, his devotion to art eventually took him to Harrow School of Art in London during the 1960s. It was here that he found himself and developed the skills and vision he needed to embark on a career as an artist. Extensive travels in Europe, the Middle East and in the Australian outback have given him an appreciation of widely different cultures and landscapes which is reflected in his work.

Robert Birch's ouevre covers a spectrum from colourful, abstracted paintings to closely-observed studies of the world around him -  you can see them in the Archive sections.

"The wonder of the world,

The Beauty and the Power,

The shapes of things,

Their colours, lights and shades.

These things I saw

Look ye also while life lasts."
